3 Tips to Record Better Videos of Children
Recording videos of children can be tricky, and at times it may seem as though the videos you capture never look that great. In part this is because children can be challenging subjects, and it is also because most people are used to recording videos of adults.
The good news is that there are a few simple tips that you can use to vastly improve the videos that you record of children:
1. Bump up the framerate
Videos involving children almost always have a lot of movement in them, whether it is running, jumping, or playing in some other way. Because of that increasing the framerate of your video will improve how it looks a lot – and provide you with a smoother video.
If possible try to increase the framerate on your camera to 60 frames per second – even if it means reducing the resolution a notch. Odds are you’ll see the difference as soon as you do.
2. Go down to their level
If you stand up and record videos of children you’ll constantly have an overhead perspective that doesn’t look that great in most cases. That is why it helps to change your camera’s position and lower it to the children’s eye-level.
While it may be possible to crouch or bend to position your camera in this way while recording short clips, for longer videos it may be difficult. As such you may want to use a stand, or find a stable perch to place your camera.
3. Get closer to the children
The closer you are to the children that you’re recording, the more detail you’ll be able to capture. That can be especially useful, seeing as sometimes when you’re recording videos of children their reactions and expressions are what really makes the video so good.
Keep in mind there is a line that you need to toe, as you don’t want to shove the camera in a child’s face. In short, you should get as close as possible to capture expressions, but not too close that you interfere with them.
Make it a point to try out these tips the next time you record a video of children, and observe what a big difference they can make. It is worth noting that you should always record more video than necessary, and then edit it later to trim out any parts you don’t need.
