Hello & Welcome Rod Liberal!
My name is Rod Liberal and I live in Utah with my wife, our 3 boys, and our Golden Retriever. I’m the sole developer of an iPhone app calledScreen Time – Media Time Manager which I designed to help us keep our kids from too much “indoor” time. I grew up in Brazil in a very different age sans electronics and about only 5 channels on tv which I only watched once a week. Screen time management is as important to us as money management!
I am a natural Brazilian and naturalized US citizen. I’m a lover of languages and am loosely fluent in about 5 languages. However, none of which includes a Scandinavian language :( But I’m always looking for a new challenge.
What is your favorite activity to do outdoors?
Living in Utah, as you know, we’re exposed to all sorts of outdoor opportunities. Hiking, camping, running, snowboarding, rock climbing are all just minutes away. I’m lucky to have enjoyed all of the above so far along with my family. But something as simple as a day at the park with our boys is also very rewarding.
What was the most surprising moment as a business owner?
I think adjusting to the new social structure of business, especially within the software industry, has been the most surprising moment for me. I always thought that I’d create a product, hire various individuals to market it, and watch the millions fly in. Well, not really, but it’s much more dynamic than that today. You get to interact much more personally with your clients, for good or not so good, and feedback is honest, direct and almost instant. There is a much greater reward in pursuing a business in which you really believe you’re helping other people.
What challenges have you faced as a business owner?
Motivation is number one for me. I live a busy life, like many people, where I have to decide where to draw the fine line between being a workaholic and spending valuable time with my wife and ever-so-fast growing children. Also being able to tell the difference between night and day :)
What is your favorite children’s story or fairytale?
We are a reading family. I think my kids have read more books in their short lives so far than I have in my 30+ years. I personally hold dear Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama books and Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough. My oldest is really enjoying my Calvin & Hobbes collection now, so that’s been really fun to relive them with him.
What advice would you give to a new business owner?
Always aim to help your customers first, within the best of your abilities. If you are genuinely concerned with improving their lives through your services and/or products, success will naturally follow.
