Meet a Mom: Interview with Nelly

Meet a Mom: Interview with Nelly

Meet Scandinavian Mama Nelly from the blog SWEDISH AMERICAN MAMMA. (Read her blog how she is trying to bring back Swedish culture to her American life.)

Tell us about yourself:

I have been blogging since the big re-design of blogger in 2004. Before then I wrote my own personal webpage that pretty much looked like a blog and I started that in 2001 I think. It was a way for me to stay connected with friends and family in Sweden after I left for school in the US.

In 2009 when we had Little L I started to feel uncomfortable publishing my kids names and pictures on the web, and my blog changed shape. In April of 2010 I decided to shut down the personal blog and now I only blog on www.SwedishAmericanMamma.com.

Tell us about your blog:

This is a blog that for me helps me to focus on bringing my Scandinavian culture to my life in the US. I mostly write about Scandinavian kids fashion. I still post a few pictures of my two beautiful girls, but not very often.

I was born and raised in the south of Sweden with a Danish father and a Swedish mother. I now live in one of the Southern states in the US with my “uber” American husband and have been very “Americanized”. We have two beautiful girls, Little L (2 years) and Baby L (4 months) and a white fluffy dog.

What is your favorite activity to do with children?

Is there a favorite? I enjoy almost every minute of it, even when they are screaming. I think my favorite moments right now is when my big girl walks over to the little girl just to say hi. She does it in a super high pitch voice and then pets her on the head ever so lightly.

Our favorite thing to do this summer is go to the pool. Little L is like a fish in the water, and I am quite the shark myself, so we have a lot of fun.

What was the most surprising moment as a parent?

How much I like being a parent. I have never been crazy about other people’s kids, even my best friends so I wasn’t sure how I would react.

What challenges have you faced as a parent?

Teaching Swedish. My dad was very good at talking Swedish, so did that all the time and I have in a way fallen in the same trap. I understand every work in Danish, but don’t feel comfortable speaking it. When Little L started talking it all happened so fast and it was just easier to ask her things in English since she understood what I was asking. I have made some improvements in the past couple of month and she now understand a little Swedish so we will just have to keep working on it.

What is your favorite children’s story or fairytale?

I don’t know that I have a favorite story or fairytale, maybe “The Princess and the Pea”. I do have a favorite song – “Trollmors vaggvisa” (I don’t think there is a English version of that). It translates to “The Trolls Lullaby”.
What are your favorite Scandinavian companies, stores, or food?

IKEA! I love to go to IKEA to just walk around and feel like I am in Sweden for a little while. Unfortunately we don’t have one close by so it does not happen often enough.

For my kids clothing it’s Polarn O. Pyret that’s my favorite. The quality of their clothes is great and they have absolutely fantastic customer service with fast shipping (I don’t live close by).

What advice would you give to a new mom?

Take it one day at a time and enjoy every minute.
